TIPS TO MAINTAIN GOOD ORAL HEALTH

Good oral health is important to your overall health. It is linked to better overall health. It also helps in maintaining a good facial appearance. Here are a few tips for maintaining good oral health.

  • Brushing 2x a day

It’s recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, morning and night. When you brush your teeth, be sure to use ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. This protects against cavities from forming overnight while you sleep. It’s also a good habit to replace your toothbrush every three to four months to prevent old bristles from damaging your enamel and causing damage over time. This way, you’re always using a clean toothbrush to protect your teeth and gums from harmful bacteria that can form and lead to decay.

  • Flossing daily

In addition to brushing your teeth, you should remember to floss every day. This helps remove plaque from areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Plaque is a sticky biofilm that constantly forms on and between teeth if you do not brush or floss it away after you eat. This can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated. If you already floss regularly but want to improve your technique, try using a waxed floss or interdental cleaner to clean in between your back molars. These can gently and effectively remove plaque and food debris that cause cavities.

  • Regular dental checkups

Your teeth require regular inspection, cleanings, and preventative care to help keep them healthy. Routine hygiene visits allow your dentist to monitor the health of your teeth and identify problems before they become serious. This helps prevent the need for additional procedures later on. If problems are caught early, they can often be more easily treated. These visits typically include a comprehensive examination of your mouth and the surfaces of your teeth. This allows your dentist to look for signs of decay and other issues that may affect the health and function of your teeth. He or she can also screen you for oral cancer and other health problems. You should also have your teeth cleaned twice a year to remove plaque buildup.

  • Avoid tobacco use

In addition to at-home care and regular checkups, you should also avoid tobacco use. Smoking or using tobacco puts you at a higher risk of developing gum disease. It also causes stains on your teeth. Talk with your dentist about how you can quit smoking or stop using tobacco products altogether to improve your oral and overall health. Other lifestyle changes you can make include cutting back on sugary foods and beverages and avoiding nail biting and grinding your teeth.
